OP

"The joke is on her, demonstrating the shallowness of people who name-drop all the time."

Oh if only it were actually that deep...

And yet, several people in this thread get it...

but... wha? that's totally what the joke is

Previous anon - this OP is blowing my mind! Tahani's big flaw is that she's too obsessed with being seen as glamorous and important, and beating her sister for her parents' and everyone else's love. That's the lesson she has to learn...not how to stop making random pop culture references.

Like, the whole point of saying "my close personal friend" is that it's impossible to be close personal friends with that many people

that's the gag

Spoilers for the end of S2

^Exactly. That was basically the entire point of the test the Judge gave her at the end of S2. I thought it was telling that she was able to resist the temptation of opening the doors to talk to any of her celebrity friends, but she gave in at the last door to confront her parents, because it's their love and approval she's been searching for all along. Her realizing and accepting that she was never going to get it showed how much she had grown as a person. Sure, all of that was undone when the timeline was reset, but if she did it once she can definitely do it again.

So her constant name-dropping is both funny and sad at the same time, like a lot of other running gags in The Good Place. And, like the rest of Team Cockroach, I just want to give her a big hug. And maybe ask her to marry me.

And the reason why Tehani's in the Bad Place was described multiple times.

Er, it's not that deep, tbh. It's pretty obvious this is what the joke is about, and it's entirely in character with her personality. That's the joke.

Curious if you also think "Oh, there's Chidi being anxious and indecisive again. What a tired joke," or "Man, Eleanor sure is mean to people. This show needs a new schtick," or "Wow, is Jason dumb! I wonder if he's ever going to grow as a person or if the writers are just going to be this lazy the whole series."

It's almost like these are personality traits of the characters revealing their deepest flaws and insecurities or something.

nayrt

Yeah. I think the OP is definitely missing the point and not realizing that they're missing the point. Either that or they're shaky on the concept of characterization.
