She represents the anger state of grief. She's almost a single trait character in that respect. Steve is denial, Theo is bargaining, Luke is depression, and Nell is acceptance. They're literally the stages of grief in birth order.

That's an interesting analysis. I definitely see Shirley, Steve and Luke fitting that theory, but Theo and Nell are a bit harder to slot into those holes.
