Bathroom and kitchen must be kept clean. Shared living areas can get dusty/untidy, but try to move your personal crap to your own room at the end of the day at least. Do what you want in your own room, but do NOT attract vermin, create a fire hazard, bad smells, or mold.

That reminds me of the time I lived in a rented room and a rat showed up. My room wasn't messy at all but I had some chocolate in it and the rat left a piece of chocolate with gnaw marks on my bed.

I set up a non-killing trap but the person who owned the house set up a killing one and they got the rat first. I can't say I was really choked up about it.

In the end I got a big plastic box for any food that went in my room. Also now I know rats will eat chocolate.

...OK this is kind of irrelevant.

having known people who had pet rats I can tell you rats LOVE chocolate. also rats will eat damn near anything. Of course, so will some humans.

LOL, oh no, not your chocolate stash! Rats have cast iron stomachs. One of my friends had a huge pet rat that could and did eat everything, so I'm not surprised.

(And to be fair about the vermin thing, we always get a mouse or two that try to move in when it gets cold, but it's still a lot easier to get rid of them when they're not being fed.)
