I don't know. He's received a great deal of (not unjustified) criticism and mockery, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily affecting his career or professional clout. His critics might wish him to be powerless in Hollywood but I don't think that's the case. That's not how Hollywood works. You can be a critical failure, but if you've got a track record as a commercial success, you've still got a career. Look at Michael Bay.

Having a career and having the clout to revive someone else's (assuming she even wants hers "revived") are two entirely different things. Is he powerless? No, unfortunately not. Does he have the same level of "cred" as he once did? Definitely not.

"Throw X a bone" does not mean "singlehandedly revive X's career". It probably usually means something more like "Cast X in an impactful guest / recurring / supporting role".

Fair enough - but it still is assuming that SMG would want him to...

Nobody said anything about reviving her career, though. The phrase "throw someone a bone" means you're doing them a relatively small favor. Because it's a bone, and not say, a 16 oz. porterhouse. Whedon may not have the clout to turn around someone's career - though IMO, that's not really about power, per se, and involves many other factors. But he has more than enough clout to give a former colleague a small role in one of his projects.

Again, assuming she WANTS him to.
