"The story is doing something unexpected" and "the characters are doing something unexpected" sound interchangeable to me. In both cases you're talking about something changing your writing, without your conscious control.

And in both cases, it's not a cutsey affectation or a literal external force, it's just trying to describe how it feels when something pops into your head that you didn't deliberately plan out ahead of time. Or if your subconscious mind is still turning the idea over, so it's pulling on you and influencing your writing, but it's just instinct, not something you can articulate yet.

Exactly this!! I can have the best-laid plans in the world and yet sometimes still something pops into my mind and slots so neatly into place that I KNOW it's a much better choice for the story than whatever I originally planned.

And it doesn't make me a jerk or pretentious (!!) to say that my characters took a different path than the one that I planned. And sometimes it really does pop out seemingly out of nowhere, which can be hella startling. But y'know, some of us maybe have a more active subconscious than others.
