OP, I'm with the ones on this page who state "I'm going to judge others who have a different experience from me."
When you write, do you pre-plan every action, every dialogue in your head? Or does it flow as you write? That's the way I perceive 'the characters got away from me'. Of course, it's not the 'characters' but sometimes even things that (in my experience) authors pre-plan in their heads go a different way when they're actually writing the fic.
This, to me, is the pleasure of writing.
