that was blunter than I meant to be and I apologise for being rude, I stand by the facts and figuring this out now is better than waiting and not knowing what will happen later.

Have a good talk with your parent, get copies of all your documents, their documents, anything pertaining to the house and its upkeep, bills and loans, and look up how to get a credit report in your state, etc., if you have questions about what to do next get on r/personalfinance on reddit and ask the people there.

It's stressful being unsure of what the future holds, and it can be scary to focus on this stuff, but it is ultimately so important and you'll gain a lot more confidence and independence by taking this step.

The house will be sold by my mother's second husband after she dies because he pays the mortgage, he never wanted to live in another house (my mother wanted one), and he doesn't want to live at this location any longer (she did). He doesn't care about me and never will. We just tolerate each other.
