If you want to get really technical, Conrad Veidt's character in "The Man Who Laughs" (1928) also had the same carved rictus grin. It's a concept that's been around for a while. I seem to recall reading that the TDK Joker's scars were directly inspired by "The Man Who Laughs," so I think it's supposed to be more an homage than a ripoff of earlier material.

To get EVEN more technical, that movie is based on a novel by Victor Hugo (somewhere around 1860s-70s, I think), so yeah.

That character doesn't have scars that I recall. he's just always smiling that way (having been mutilated as a child).

But the Joker himself was based on the Conrad Veidt character. I mean, the character in the comics' look was based on it. Which is really cool!
