107. Yo. Asshole. This member of the pre-movie Watchman fandom thinks you're a homophobic fucktard who needs to step off and stop trying to speak for the rest of us.

151. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point, but how is finding a character sexually attractive necessarily objectifying them?

155. You do realize that your theft affected the bookstore you stole from rather than SMeyer or the publisher, right? 'Cause, yeah, the books suck profoundly, and I've got no problem with torching them, but taking it out on some random bookstore is really kind of a shitty thing to do.

Borders is a vast and wealthy corporation, someone stealing 10 books off them won't cause them the blink of 1/1000th of an eyelid.

Believe it or not, the employees of individual chain stores are impacted by theft at those stores. And I don't care how big the company is, stealing from them because you're pissed off at someone else who won't even be affected (except, perhaps, by Borders ordering more copies of her books to replace the stolen ones) is both juvenile and not cool.

But you've got no problem with someone torching them?

Hello, book burning is also juvenile and not cool.

In general, I'm opposed to book burning, but I'm angered and horrified enough by the portrayal of sexual assault as something that's: a) a result of loving someone that much, b) not worth making a fuss over, and c) the girl's fault for trying to remain friends with a guy who's so in love with her when she doesn't feel the same way in books aimed at teenage girls that I can completely sympathize with the desire to set a few copies ablaze. Which, you're right, is probably juvenile.

But, issues of book burning aside, there's just something unbelievably skeevy about stealing from someone completely uninvolved in the process of producing something because you're angry about the content or quality of that thing.

Right, because fucking up a struggling business is totally the same as setting some paper and glue on fire.

151 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-08-22 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the finding them sexually attractive part that bothers me. It's that when people say "I'd hit it," it sounds like the sexually attractive part is the only redeeming thing about that character.

(It's more annoying when it's said about real people imo, because they are not unfeeling characters.)

Okay, I see where you're coming from. I always sort of assumed it was meant in an ironic, self-mocking, "I can't believe I'm admitting this, even in an anonymous secret" kind of way, but I admit I hadn't thought about it a whole lot, previously. Thank you for explaining.
