185. I really need to get myself to this alternate reality Heroes fandom where it's the Maya-haters who are the minority and dogpiled everywhere. Do I need a TARDIS or something to get there? Or do I just need to take whatever pills you're taking?

I'll start respecting people's dislike of a character when the majority of you guys 1) stop acting like she only came to the US to kill people and get a husband, and 2) stop call the twins "Mexican". You really work harder at forcing Latino stereotypes on Maya than the show ever did. Congrats.

OP here. You don't occupy the same fandom spaces I do. I was told I was being racist against myself when I didn't like her. So yeah, it does happen, and calling her Mexican is fucking stupid. But that doesn't invalidate my position.

Fair enough. But please stop pulling the "I'm oppressed by fandom for my opinion!!!" card when it's blatantly obvious that the vast majority of this fandom has wanted Maya dead since halfway into season two. And I include people like the Television Without Pity editorial staff when I say "fandom" here. You are hardly in a minority, and no, you are not in any grave fandom danger for voicing your opinion.

Also, remember that it goes both ways. People might call you a racist for hating Maya, but fandom consensus (at least during season two) was that if you liked the twins despite the bad writing (which they had aplenty, just like the rest of the characters in season two did), you were the racist who was oblivious to racism in the mass media, and nothing you said about the show or racism could be taken seriously.

Why can't this fandom just have a discussion about this topic without being reduced to name-calling and character-bashing? That's all I'm asking for, as someone who didn't particularly like or dislike Maya during the season, but became a fan as a reaction to what I thought was an entirely unfair backlash that smelt too strongly of women hating on women.

I can fully acknowledge that Heroes, as a show, has problems. I'd love to discuss it. However, some of the "discussions" this fandom has regarding Maya is downright bigoted and stupid. I'm glad you agree that calling her a Mexican is stupid, but it's what this fandom does, again and again, along with accusing her of being a whore because she dared to fall in love with one man in a situation of dire stress. How the hell is that fair? I don't think I can be blamed for thinking that this fandom is just as bigoted, if not more so, than the actual show.

And if you're curious as to how Maya's character was supposed to have developed, I recommend you watch the season two DVDs or read up on the intended last half of her arc. Heroes is a show about foreigners coming to America so they can save it from its own white male idiots. Again and again.

I should add: and that the majority of fandom is blind to this, and keeps adoring its white male idiot prettyboys, does not change this fact. That the show itself continues to consider Peter, of all people, a hero bugs the hell out of me, but only in this fandom will you find people who claim Nathan saved the world. Ew.
