*shrugs* I'm sure some people don't like Maya because she interferes with their chosen pairing, and I think those people are idiots. People shouldn't fuss over what is canon or not - if you like a pairing that's not canon, just write an alternate universe fic. With this series, all sorts of futures are possible.

I'm not saying Maya has no positive qualities, and she has done some things that are courageous. I just think she's easily manipulated and makes bad decisions (mainly in blindly trusting Sylar over the doubts of her own brother, which I found rather irritating.) Hopefully the writers have learned from their mistakes last season, and give her a better storyline.

There's something we agree on 100%.

I do agree that she was gullible and too easily trusting. However, I think people who dismiss her as weak and impossibly stupid tend to overlook how desperate her circumstances and mindset were. Here's a woman who's left behind everything familiar to her and been abandoned by everyone but her brother. (You might recall the scene where the family friend who had known her since birth screeched at her and called her evil.) Literally no one, not even Alejandro, can really understand what she's going through--until she meets Sylar. After being feared and rejected by everyone, all of a sudden she's found someone who wants to help her and claims to know exactly how she feels. He gives her the boost of hope that she needs. Why wouldn't she latch on to that? Sure, the audience is screaming "Duh! He's an evil serial killer!" but there's no way she could have known that. Sylar is brilliant at pushing people's buttons to get them to do what he wants. And Alejandro's suspicion probably seemed easy to push aside as just the overprotective brother--a role he played during most of her life, I would guess. And that's not even getting into the whole issue of her faith, and her firm belief that Sylar had been sent by God to help her.

Anyway. I'm not trying to get into an argument or convince you that Maya should be your new favorite character or anything. And again, I'm not saying she wasn't gullible, but I really think people who act like she's the stupidest person to ever walk the face of the earth are being too hard on her given the desperation of her circumstances.

Oh, I hate this argument. Do you think Mohinder was weak for trusting Sylar? Sylar is a goddamn sociopath, and it's been well-documented that people with sociopathic tendencies can get people to trust them and easily exploit existing character flaws. Hell, he managed to get under Noah's skin in under ten minutes, and that man is a badass.
