Afraid you are right OP and I even have a sad example for you. My brother's favourite actress / director / head of theatre group was one of the people who went on a rant how 'gays ruin theatre' and does not employ such. Or Jewish people (I assume if someone is both - she explodes). She is quite an important person in her country of origin so ... assume half of actors whom got declined because of this were due to her.

I think it's specifically the contrast of theatre being "full of gay men" (and pretty much inextricably linked in the western cultural consciousness as being so) while being hostile to those same gay men acting visibly gay.

I would say that's the same about people who idolise Rick from Rick and Morty.

I love the show, but Rick is someone to be pitied and not held up to be someone to aspire to. The show points this out in every episode (no more so than the Toxic episode - Rick literally believes his love for Morty is 'toxic'), but there's a bunch of idiot man children thinking Rick is the hero.

I'm not going to lie, I really enjoyed Cookie Kwan, mostly because she took no shit and you didn't really see that from a lot of female east asian characters.. but I can also see the problematic side of her too.
