I can't really comment on Sweeny, but I'm glad at least that someone else knows of Life on Mars. It was a good show, and I enjoyed learning a bit of 70s British culture.

I only learned about Life on Mars when I was going through a Martha/Simms! Master binge, and someone wrote an amazing crossover of Martha and Simms character from Life on Mars. It was so fucking good. Made me wanna watch the show. And wish there had been more fic. :(

There was quite a lot of buzz about it when it first came out, but it was only two seasons (and 16 episodes) long, so when it finished the fandom seemed to die down pretty fast. :(

A lot of people in Doctor Who fandom at the time seemed to be into it. That's how I discovered it.

It's not that niche? Unless perhaps you are not in the UK. It was quite highly regarded and watched by many when it was on.
