It went exactly how it was expected to go. People are just really deeply committed to the idea that the Democrats are losing because they're opposed to racism or because millenials or whatever. It's an article of faith.

I think people also overestimated the "Blue Wave" as well. Most states are gerrymandered so that Democratic turnout had to be very high to flip seats, and Trump did a very good (albeit nakedly racist and completely repugnant) job stoking fear in order to motivate Republicans to vote.

People got their hopes up because they always do. That's how people work.

The reality is that it was a really good election for Democrats by every reasonable marker. The fact that they didn't win literally every race doesn't change that. It was a blue wave; it just wasn't a total repudiation and rejection of the Republican Party. Democrats should be celebrating.

Exactly. There won't be a total rejection of the Republican Party until more of the old racist bigots die off and more young people become old enough to vote because it's a simple matter of numbers.

Right.

What people actually wanted to prove in the election was that we don't live in a country full of fascists. And that's something the election could never have proven, because we do.

But what we did prove is that fascists are in a considerable minority.
