It's totally possible she was having a bad day. :( This is why I don't usually take offense if a customer is a bit rude/off, because we all have days like that. But she kept on going even after I'd apologised (straight away) and said I didn't mean any harm. I guess she'd had some bad experiences and I'm sorry for that.

It's strange. You never really know what will trigger someone else. Could be she felt "safe" going off on you, but it doesn't make it right. Plus, you apologized. She could have been gracious and accepted it. She chose not to.

We all have our triggers, I guess. I'm really bad at arguments/confrontation and was completely unprepared for it so I probably could have handled it better. Once she started she didn't really give me much of a chance to say anything apart from "I'm sorry" and I just sort of sat there.

I never really know what to say to people I've inadvertently set off, either. Sometimes I just freeze until the person is done ranting, or crack a dumb joke in the hopes of lightening the mood. It's hard to be prepared because most don't expect something this bizarre to happen on any given day. You "probably could have handled it better"? Eh, maybe. So could she. One can educate and make his/her point without screaming at someone else like you ran over their dog or something.
