CW: Animal death

There was a garage fire in my old house last night, where my grandfather lives. He and his girlfriend got out fine.

My cat, who really was more Grandpa's cat, died from smoke inhalation under Papa's bed.

The tried to look for him, they did. But they couldn't find him. I'm devastated, and I know Grandpa is worse. I hate it. Some part of me can't forgive him--he smoked in that garage, and there were gas cans in it. But I know he's also not going to be able to forgive himself, either.

Right now my feelings are irrational. I'm looking at kittens tomorrow--not a replacement but a successor, because that's kind of how it works in my family. It's a silly belief, but our pets tend to lead us to successors and we got the call that a neighbor's looking to give her cat's kittens to loving homes today not too long after finding out about the cat back with Grandpa.

I'm a mess.

Oh God. I'm so, so sorry anon. All the hugs for you, if you want them. Your poor kitty. But they were loved and cherished and lived a good life. You do what you have to for you. It is totally okay to be a mess. Pets are family members. I can't even imagine how much of a wreck I'd be if my cat died. They are family. You mourn in whatever way you need to. And it is okay to have another pet. It is okay to find someone else to give your love to.
