Whether the emcee is a master manipulator and collaborator or ultimately a victim largely depends on who's directing the play.

Yeah, in the last production I saw (plus the movie), he survives. I tend to prefer that, not just because it's happier but because he's in so many ways narrating the story more than Cliff is.

I don't think the play has the right punch until the second you see how horrible it's become, that this creature of pure fun and mischief is reduced to being a numbered prisoner.
