I will happily scream from the rafters about how "meh" I find her writing.

IT'S MEH.

MEEEEEEEEEEEEH.

Knowing that Cassandra Clare is wanky requires reading some old fandom wiki pages.

Knowing that Cassandra Clare is a bad writer requires reading Cassandra Clare's books.

+1 LOL!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
SO MUCH THIS

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No one mentions it because it is a given. It is like complaining water is wet.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I say this as someone who is fandom old enough to literally been on fanfiction.net when Cassandra Claire was blacklisted in 2001: I don't think half the people criticizing her have even read the books. They just remember all the stuff she did back then.

I really think that her fanbase and her father apparently working in publishing helped her gain popularity, but I don't really know that. I do know a friend read the first book and said it read like Buffy with the lines changed again.

Considering she ripped off a lot of BtVS one-liners I'm not surprised.

I don't think half the people criticizing her have even read the books.

Why would they?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
You couldn't pay me enough to read that awful person's books...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, why do you think she plagiarized so much? She can't write.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE

This was what the wank was all about as I remember it.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember when the first book came out, someone had uploaded the first couple of chapters online and sporked it. For a brief period, her writing was mocked a lot, both for how unimpressive it was and how some of it was pulled right from her crappy fanfiction. But the problem is that the books aren't entertainingly bad and haven't reached the pop culture status of Twilight or 50 Shades, so there's no fun to be had in hate-reading them.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's kind of implicit in the criticism of her plagiarized route to success that her doing so meant her writing was basically hackwork.

Everybody *constantly* fucking praised the Draco Trilogy back in the day, but when I tried to start reading it, it was so *boring*. I quit after the first chapter and would always roll my eyes at people squeeing over it.

And this was before I read the whole plagiarism story on badpenny (Journalfen).

She’s mostly mocked for her plagerism. Smeyer might be a hack but at least twilight is her own original idea do not steal and all. Why should we give the plagerist any more attention than she deserves considering all her side endeavors flopped.

I was given to understand that Twilight was originally Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfic, redone into an original work? Or am I wrong in seeming to remember something like that?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
My sister-in-law likes the books, and I just... bite my tongue. And sigh inwardly a lot.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I started getting into booktube these past few months and it’s ridiculous how popular her books are in the community.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
The Authentic Observer did a whole series about how bad the writing is in her novels. Plus some of the stuff that's happened SINCE her novels came out. (Yes, she got hit with a copyright infringement case.) Funny and eloquent with some good observations about YA in general.

Her history of fandom wankery is reason enough to criticize, but yeah, her writing is generally terrible even aside from the whole plagiarism issue. It's not just that it's sloppy, there's also this whole element of smug, pretentious self-aggrandizement to most of of her work, too. It's like she's going "Oh, aren't I just so terribly clever," with each line.

I do wish people wouldn't harp on her looks/weight, though. That's just cruel.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Can we still make fun of her ridiculous self-insert heroine?

Oh, HELL yes.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
But if she plagerized in her fandom writing, then how are we to know her real writing's legit?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Like others have said, I've mostly heard about her in relation to her plagiarizing for her Draco Trilogy. That doesn't give me the highest impression of her current (non-plagiarized, I assume) writing.

It's a shame to hear that people make fun of her looks, though. Even the worst wankers don't deserve that.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's not even just that she's not a great writer. It's that she has a very long history of outright plagiarism (and bullying). She's a hack, and to witness Hank Green mention her in the same breath as some much greater writers... jfc, Hank, get a CLUE.

I've seen the shaming about her looks a long time ago, and it's completely unnecessary.
