A) We shouldn't harass people about it

B) It's probably a good thing to be oversensitive to, because sexualization of minors is a bad thing overall that people have justifiable issues with. I'd rather be oversensitive about norms concerning underage characters than deal with 3000-year-old vampires who look 13 all the damn time.

C) It's bad to harass people and no one should harass people about it.

D) Harassing people is bad.

E) I'm not justifying harassing people.

Addressing b, because everything else should be common sense, I can understand the genuine issue of oversexualizing real minors (hello look at the ridiculousness in the Stranger Things fandom and the ickyness surrounding some of the very much minor actors), but OP seems to be almost talking completely about fictional minors, ie 2D minors, not minors played by real flesh and blood minors?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's absolutely what's happening.

I think my point is that, essentially, it's an example of people being overly strict in enforcing basically good norms, and that it's not entirely a bad thing for people to be overly strict in enforcing those norms.

But... why? I mean, like I said, I can totally understand the 'please do not perve on the very obviously underage actors unless you are their age', but to say, 'please do not perve on the 2D character who the creator tells us is 15 but looks and acts nearly 20 ' seems... weird to me? Especially since as OP says, most writers get around this by just 'aging up' the character in fics.

There's no problem with it in itself. But any kind of laxity, or any kind of formal letter-of-the-law, people are going to take advantage of it and find loopholes and use it as an excuse for things that are problems. Give people on the Internet an inch and they'll take a mile, one way or another.

"give people an inch and they'll take a mile"

this is true, but it's true in both directions, and the inch and then some of "this is basically a good norm SO PEOPLE MAY AS WELL ALWAYS ERR ON THE SIDE OF JUST DON'T HAVE ANY QUESTIONABLE EROTIC INTERESTS" means people absolutely ARE getting harassed all the time for genuinely harmless stuff

like, you can say you're against that, but that's the mile people are actually taking in fandom spaces right now and have been for awhile

THIS.

I think it's pretty clearly about harassment given how people squee about original works dealing with teen and pre-teen sexuality all the fucking time.

What?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
How many of the folks who go nuts over the mere suggestion of a ship involving teens are also down for Sabrina, Titans, or Love, Simon?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Or Grease, His Dark Materials, The Tombs of Atuan, and some of the early Weetzie Bat books.

Classic Harry Potter, both canon and fandom.

I can't ever face this issue without being reminded of that time the Overwatch fandom decided that shipping the hamster with the gorilla is problematic because the hamster is 14.

And people were debating whether a hamster being 14 means he's actually ancient and not underage since he's a hamster and they don't live that long irl.

Which I realise contributes nothing of note to the issue of this secret I just feel like maybe it will make your day a little bit brighter anytime the underage ship debate comes up.

Overwatch fandom is ridiculous in general because somehow shipping 37 year old McCree with 50+ year old reaper is incest and pedophilia. Antis are a plague and I have no idea why they’re so attracted to the racist canon cesspool that is overwatch.

This is fucking hilarious

People are really eager to get hyperaggressive over this and this disturbed me even when I thought they were at least factually correct.
