no lies op. I just started it and god is it dreadfully slow. It enjoyable but moved at a snails pace and took til the Mina flashback episode to finally pick up steam only to slow down again. I wasn’t even aware it was getting a spin-off due to how rushed and cut short the final season was.

I tried watching this but, yeah, half the plotlines in the first season seemed really boring, and I kinda realized the only part of it I liked was Eva Green

I tried watching it, but the sex scene at the beginning of episode one put me off. It gave me the impression that it's one of those shows full of pointless sex and violence.

Seriously! There was so much good stuff in this show and the pacing is terribly, terribly wrong. The actors were mostly really into their characters, which certainly helped, but it was hard to hold onto the horror when 3/4 of the episode was meaningful looks and wandering around London*, then the other 1/4 was the actual scary plot.

*I mean, I did personally enjoy Eva Green wearing Gothy dresses and wandering around London, but even I was getting sick of it eventually.

Agreed. I tried to get through the first season and barely made it. Eva Green looks gorgeous but there is SO MUCH BROODING and not much action. Like okay, we know there's a den of dangerous vampires in London but hey, let's sit in this Victorian study and stare moodily out the window some more, etc. etc.

I'm still salty about how dirty they did Vanessa.

+1, so hard.

I ended up rage quitting as soon as she suddenly gave up and decided to just let Dracula/whoever it was idr do the evil thing. The last two seasons shit over her character completely and I was not here for it.

It reminded me terribly of the kind of unfinished WIP where the author is writing hundreds of thousands of words out of bubbling enthusiasm and love for the characters, but without structure and an overarching plot: it starts out so promising and then just deteriorates more and more until you ragequit.

Haha, yeah, I can see the comparison. My biggest beef with the show was that almost none of the plots seemed to really go anywhere. They'd seem quit promising at first and they'd start to build...and then they'd just trail off, or get subverted into other plots, or occasionally be wrapped up in a way that felt oddly half-baked and unsatisfying.

Which sounds exactly like about three hundred badly written fanfics I've read/skimmed/closed out of. But with Penny Dreadful I always found it a lot more baffling, because unlike with bad fanfic, Penny Dreadful always seemed to be quite well made and well written. Like, I kept waiting for some grand unified plot to take shape, that would somehow explain and give meaning to all of the narrative loose ends and dead ends that had come before.

LOL... I've seen so many fics like this.
