I'd assume a different afterlife structure than "Heaven and Hell" is in play, but whatevs.

AYRT—I assume Stan Lee is wherever Stan Lee wanted to go and after meeting up with his friends and family they say “hey Stan have we got a treat for you!” and all pile into a freight elevator to go down to Hitler’s private hell, which is where everyone who lost friends and family to the Holocaust gets to punch him in the face, throw rotten eggs and veggies, spit and oiss on him, and point and laugh, if they want to.

Then they take the elevator back up and leave Hitler spitting teeth and covered in piss and rotten egg. He grows his teeth back every day so everyone can have a go.

idk a ton about Stan Lee, but I know he did a lot to make sure the heroes he created were represented well throughout all their bajillions of incarnations. It's largely thanks to his influence and continued involvement with Marvel that Spider-Man, Iron Man, etc. have always been heroic and worthwhile role models, rather than edgy grimdark trainwrecks.

When Stan created Spider-Man, he was creating what's widely consider the first "relatable" superhero. Spider-Man was a kid who had a life and family, girl troubles, a crappy job, angst, etc. When he saw a villain on the street he'd crack a joke rather than strike a pose. He made sure to show his heroes struggling with real issues, and overcoming them. Stan Lee's vision of what superheroes should be has inspired generations of kids and adults.

Stan Lee didn't create Spiderman.

Uh, yeah, he did. Stan Lee was the writer and editor, and Steve Ditko was writer+artist. And they worked with Jack Kirby for some of the early concept work.

Lee was a credited writer and everything, yes, that's true so far as it goes, but he substantially inflated his actual creative role in making the character. And the creative role that he played generally.

Didn't Stan Lee say that he thought Spider-Man should always be white and heterosexual? I"m not suggesting it tarnishes his entire legacy but that insistence seemed weird to me.

No. He was talking about Peter Parker.

"On Monday, Stan Lee, Spider-Man’s co-creator and the godfather of the Marvel Comics empire, said that he supported keeping Peter Parker straight and white.

“I wouldn’t mind, if Peter Parker had originally been black, a Latino, an Indian or anything else, that he stay that way,” Lee told the comic industry Web site Newsarama. “But we originally made him white. I don’t see any reason to change that.”"

And it really wasn't so much, "He must be white" as *shrug* don't really see a point.

No, as part of the licensing talks with Sony there were a bunch of stipulations about what Spider-Man could and couldn't do/be. One of those is that Peter Parker should remain white and straight. Stan Lee felt that they should stay true to his original conception of the character. He's been very supportive of Miles Morales (Spider-Man but not white) and other minority super heroes over the years.

Here's what he had to say about the leaked Sony stuff:

“I wouldn’t mind, if Peter Parker had originally been black, a Latino, an Indian or anything else, that he stay that way. But we originally made him white. I don’t see any reason to change that.”

“I think the world has a place for gay superheroes, certainly. But again, I don’t see any reason to change the sexual proclivities of a character once they’ve already been established. I have no problem with creating new, homosexual superheroes.”

“It has nothing to do with being anti-gay, or anti-black, or anti-Latino, or anything like that. Latino characters should stay Latino. The Black Panther should certainly not be Swiss. I just see no reason to change that which has already been established when it’s so easy to add new characters. I say create new characters the way you want to. Hell, I’ll do it myself.”

Doing a bit of googling, it seems like it's less "Spider-man must be white/hetero" and more like "Peter Parker is always white/hetero" - meaning that other people who take up the Spider-man mantle can be PoC or LGBT+, just not specifically Peter.

Lee's philosophy seemed to be the argument of "Instead of changing the race/gender/whatever of established characters, make original characters."

I’m glad he lived a nice long life

I don't even know much about comics, but I've always respected the hell out of Stan Lee, and he will be missed.
