What series do you love that isn't but should be a live-action movie/mini-series?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ever watch an anime, read a comic, or play a game and think shit, this would be awesome as a live-action movie or mini-series? Who would you cast, and how would you make it work?

How about a series you love but think it would absolutely not translate into real life?

I THOUGHT Death Note would make a great live-action movie or mini-series. But now two separate companies have made terrible movie adaptations of it, so maybe not..

World War Z. It was MADE for a TV series. But then Brad Pitt took its name while throwing away everything else about the source material. :(

Watching the anime, I think Banana Fish would be an awesome live-action, but with Kill Bill-esque stylization. It's got enough grit to be compelling in a "real life" setting but Ash is just a little too larger-than-life at times to be done justice in a hyper-realistic atmosphere.

Banana Fish would be pretty great as a live action series!

I still want live action Cowboy Bebop, I thought that was supposed to be a thing? As in, the rights were sold already?

Apparently they're planning on starting production next April

Yay!

I mean I guess we can assume it'll be a whitewashed flop but... yay!

I think rights getting sold doesn't mean anything is imminent.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Victorian Romance Emma needs to be a real British period piece. Ideally they'd have all the German characters played by Germans. Hakim would probably be some Bollywood heartthrob, but I'm so ridiculously out of touch with apropriately aged British actors that I have no suggestions for a cast.

I mean. Obviously they'd have to get in Daniel Radcliff as one of William's friends, but beyond that I've got nothing.

that sounds brilliant

The series is finally getting the English dub it should have had years ago, but I also love this live action idea.

I never knew I wanted this so badly until now.

I don't think that there's any series that's fundamentally unadaptable, given the right person adapting it and sufficient money. There are definitely things where it's statistically improbably for it to ever get made with enough money and creative freedom to be good.

Personally, what I wanna see most of all is a BBC live-action TV series of The Dark Is Rising. There's no reason at all that couldn't kick ass.

I dunno, I think some stories are optimized for their original medium and wouldn't really work well, without even considering money and creative freedom. First, take a lot of video games - they pretty much invariably flop as movies. A classic RPG lauded for its storyline, say, Final Fantasy VII, would be a mess in live-action form. Part of the "story" relies so much on the sense of advancement and accomplishment on behalf of the players, exploring on your own loads of dungeons and gleaning details while you do. Maybe if you made it a long live-action series, but fundamentally, I think something would be lost in translation unless you seriously rework the plot (which inevitably alienates fans, no matter how sensible the changes may be).

Likewise, I think some things "work" in anime and comics that would be less believable irl. I find my suspension for disbelief is much higher in anime, because on merit of being cartoon, I'm mentally able to throw out a lot of skepticism because the rules just feel different. Some things can be beautiful or fantastical in an anime that just would be cheesy or too weird in a live-action setting.

Well, on this note, I legitimately don't think most live-action superhero films are very good. :-/ I realize, especially with the recent popularity, that I am in the minority. But the more "real" they try to make them, the more glaringly nonsensical the premise is.

Live action Legend of Zelda, please. ;-; I realize it's tough with a protagonist known for not speaking - I wouldn't mind if they let him speak but made him a relatively generic nice boy. I just want magical visual porn and an epic high fantasy so people will stop thinking I must like Game of Thrones if I ever talk about the genre.

Rebels was awesome the way it was, but it would also have been awesome as liveaction.

OT Question

Did you see The House with a Clock in Its Walls?

I saw it today & thought of you because I know you love Cate Blanchett. She was great.

I actually hate live-action adaptations. My suspension of disbelief when it comes to actors is basically non-existent. I don't see the characters they're playing; I see either the actor themselves or whichever character I first saw them play.

Also, I absolutely hate when an actor becomes equated with a character. It's especially bad in Marvel fandoms. As a comic fan that doesn't enjoy the movies, I hate how difficult it is to avoid the MCU. Even in fanfiction specifically for the comics, authors specify that they're using "Ryan Reynolds Deadpool" or "Tom Holland Spiderman."

Maybe it's silly, but I prefer animated adaptations because the characters actually feel more "real" to me.

I probably should've just made this a secret.

I agree, OP, I don't like the feeling of real people in my fictional stories. It isn't as bad if the actor in question is new or not well-known, but still, if they are animated, they are basically 100% their own people.

Witch Hunter Robin. It'll never happen because I swear no one but me has ever seen this anime, but it's one of the few that would actually adapt well to a live action format because all the supernatural stuff is reasonably low key.

Dude, I don't quite... remember it, but when you said that I had a brief image of it. I'm semi-confident I watched it, or at least some of it, in high school. Is it worth rewatching?
