Nope, you can't count on your friends or significant others to say anything.

Only strangers will give you an honest opinion, because they don't have to.

This is a pretty weak generalization. If my friends ask for my honest opinion on something, they'll get it. Ditto family.

Wonder what it means that so many of my friends pretend my fic doesn't exist but strangers seem to like it. Only people who don't know me will publicly admit to reading my work.

It means either your fic is good but in an embarrassing way, like a guilty pleasure or very idficcy, or that what you write appeals intensely but to a niche audience.
