Are soulmate fics with those pairings worse than generic, non-soulmate romance fics with those pairings?

(sincere question)

Well, I find them so, anyway, because the idea of some grand mystic universe-level force telling me I have to love this asshole regardless of their actions is worse than the idea of me deciding to love them regardless of their actions. If I want to fuck up my life by knowingly falling for the asshole who murdered my mom, that's one thing, but some great force informing me that I have to, that the universe literally could not come up with anyone better than this, seriously upsets and depresses me.

(This is for canon-adjacent soulmate AUs, obviously, where the canon events still largely happen. Fullblown coffee-shop soulmate AUs where nobody's done anything to anybody are ... a bit twee, usually, but nowhere near as depressing).
