I actually find this a really depressing fantasy. So we have on soulmate? What if we never meet them. What if they die (does that make any subsequent relationship not true love). I think love being an accident, a choice, a process is much more romantic.

Except there is nothing about Soulmate AUs that suggest that you only have to have one soulmate. There are soulmate AUs that don't have 100% of the population have soulmates, leaving other people to find partners however they want. And the whole point of a soulmate AU is that you wouldn't die before finding them (unless it's a subversion).

There's nothing depressing about it unless you take the most negative approach possible that doesn't have anything to do with how the trope is actually written.

This is like disliking Hogwarts AUs because "what about all the people who are muggles"

But OP doesn't talk about fic, but real life, no?

Hahaha, I love this analogy! Spot on, IMO.

Except I want magic. Magic is cool to me, so a nice fantasy. Not saying no one can like Soulmate AUs, just saying it personally doesn't appeal to me at all. I don't want a soulmate, at least not in the sense that I always see it written. My preference and what I'd like in real life too is a relationship where they are friends first and the bond just develops and strengthens over time and becomes romantic. I want love where you each know each other so well. I don't want love at first sight or meant for each other or any of that.

You're completely missing the point. You can dislike soulmate AUs all you want but going on about the things that are NOT soulmate AUs is stupid. Just say you don't like it, and stop saying it's something it isn't.

Admittedly I haven't read to many. But the few I have read were exactly that, which is what turned me off the genre in the first place.
