I dunno. The fantasy that there’s one person out there for everyone and everyone actually finds their soulmate is nice, but all the complications used for angst/conflict, or maybe glossed over because it’s happy fluffy soulmate fic, make me wary of soulmate AUs. All the “I’ve given up on finding my soulmate so I’m gonna be a miserable asshole because I assume I’m the exception that doesn’t get one oh oops I have one after all” fics, the “oh boy I’m just a mild mannered pastry chef but my soulmate is a serial killer oh well he’s cute so idc” fics creep me out.

I can’t imagine just shrugging off years of misanthropy because “twu wuv,” or worse, “I’m a presumably normal person who is totally fine falling for a genocidal madman because fate says so.”

Personally I find it both easy and an appealing fantasy to imagine shrugging off years of loneliness and misanthropy and self-loathing because of true love

AYRT—I guess I have an easier time accepting dragons and time-travel and shspeshifters and whatever else than the idea that falling in love is a panacea. Like, I love romance fics and problematic ships and dislike reading about people feeling miserable and helpless or hateful so soulmate fic where having a soulmate fixes everything should be right up my alley, but it isn’t.

If one or both halves of a ship I like are nasty or cruel or mass murderers I want to see them work really fucking hard to change and be better, not magically have that work not matter. Otherwise it feels like the character’s being rewarded for being an awful person.

The only soulmate fics I’ve liked involved characters who I already think work well together without the soulmate shortcut, and both characters still working on being better people/worthy of each other.

I totally agree with that tbh, I think that's reasonable. And I think that most of the ships I like have that kind of dynamic to start with so
