Re: The worst wedding you've ever been to...

I posted this on reddit earlier, but I'll post it here too why not.

It was the wedding of the sister of one of my high school friends, i was 14 at the time. Well, first of all the ceremony was the most misogynistic bullshit I've ever seen. The bride's father walked her down the aisle all normal and then they had a "transfer of headship" ceremony wherein he handed over ownership of her to the groom.

Then we all got to hear the grandfather of the bride, who was officiating, rant and lecture for like half an hour on how 1) marriage means a wife is now the property of her husband and must give over all her own thoughts, wants, and interests in favor of those of her new master because her job is to be subservient and his is to control her; 2) any marriage that's not like this is bad and wrong and SINFUL and that's why divorce happens.

The actual vows took way less time than the insane sermon, of course they were heavy on the "obey." Then we all went downstairs to the undecorated church gym to have plain sheet cake and red punch at 5:30 pm with no music playing. Then they left and everyone straggled home. It sucked so much.

Hahaha that sounds so painful, but to be honest, the quiet undecorated church gym for plain cheesecake and nonalcoholic punch at 5:30pm made me cringe more than the insane sermon. lol

It wasn't cheesecake, it was plain Costco vanilla sheetcake lol. Cheesecake would have been great but no.

Cheesecake is probably sinful and leads to divorce.

Church of Christ, was it? Sounds sadly, depressingly familiar.

No, it was a Dutch Reformed wedding, but it was much more misogynistic and joyless than any other Dutch Reformed wedding I've ever been to---they usually tend to be on the cutesy side and have kitschy but reasonably pleasant receptions. People were really subdued at the "reception," i think everyone was a little shellshocked after the woman-hating shitshow of a ceremony lol. No one was expecting that.

I went to a wedding like that. It also included a part about well if the husband is abusive does the wife still have to obey him? Why no, of course not, but that won't be a problem because it's the husband's job to treat his wife well so she won't disobey him, and of course he would never ever NOT treat his wife well so don't you worry!

This one's reception did have good food, though.
