Job Thread

How's your work going? Need advice on something? Wanna share something great? Or not? Post it here!

Application Advice

What would you consider "related work experience" -- besides what it clearly indicates?

i.e. if the core of a specific job is say...research, but requires working with specific populations, would you count work that you might have done with specific populations, even if it wasn't in a research setting? Or do you feel like that would disqualify you because you don't have any research experience?

I don't like lying or feeling like a fraud, but I don't want to sell myself short :(

Put it on there and if it's not related they can make that decision for themselves.

Thanks!

Include it and be prepared to explain why it’s relevant at an interview. Also, do some homework so you can talk about the research even if you personally haven’t done it. Unless this is an upper-level position, it’s usually more important for you to demonstrate that you’re motivated and have a good work ethic than to be an expert in the field.

I would definitely put down working with those specific populations. Maybe they have people who know the research methods and could use someone with complementary knowledge. If you have any research experience in other areas, put that down, too.

Sometimes my boss asks me to put together a version of my CV for a project we're bidding on that is a survey for Project X in Region Y. Maybe I've never done Project X in Region Y, but I've done Project X in other places and I've also done different types of projects in Region Y. I'll put down my experience with both X Project (in any location) and Region Y (any project).

I work in a call center and it's absolutely destroying me and I'm trying to apply for jobs that aren't call centers but they're all pretty much equally shitty. I feel like I went to college for the wrong thing and I just wish I could quit and write all day but lol NOPE you have to struggle at the shitty job and write on the side until you make it and THEN quit, even if the job is wearing you out.

Just putting this out here in case anyone's ever been in the same boat and got out of it and wants to tell me that it gets better or something.

Can I quit now and run to the hills to become a farmer and never interact with civilization ever again? Because that's what I've been wanting to do.

It's not like my job is super stressful but right now I have so much to do in so little time and college stuff is piling up too. Basically I'm getting overworked.

i work in customer service (well, technically refunds, exchanges and general whinging - everybody in the place does customer service) in an electronics retailer

when you work in retail there is no such thing as "christmas" - there is only "peak"

and why the fuck did the uk have to import black friday anyway

i need to get out of this shitheap (but i've been saying that for the last seven years so)
