At my grandmother's funeral, some guy who was there as the partner of a distant relative-by-marriage was introducing himself to my father and brother and then walked over to where I was standing a few feet away and said "You must be [brother]'s wife!"

I was caught between

1) Eew
2) WTF. Why would you just assume that's the relationship here? and
3) How dare you! I'm my grandmother's eldest grandchild and you think I'm an in-law?

But just said "Uh, I'm his sister" (and then got annoyed at myself for not having said "He's my brother").

I still don't know why he assumed that, or why he acted on that assumption instead of just asking how I knew the deceased. No one had mentioned anything about my brother being married or my father having a daughter-in-law. Neither my brother nor I were married, so we weren't wearing wedding rings. We're not too far apart in age but so are most siblings. We weren't acting like we were a couple. We were just two opposite-sex people of similar apparent age standing within 10 feet of each other.
