Yo, that's totally fine! I know people who've named their kids after: a) Lord of the Rings characters, b) Lois McMaster Bujold characters, and c) characters from the TV show Charmed. And admit it. (Those are 3 different families, btw.) Alyce is a lovely name and if you love the character, that is a fine thing to name a daughter!

Now me... should I ever have a daughter, I will name her something completely ridiculous, like Crystal Rainbow Starfire or something. As is tradition in my family. Mwahahaha.

For me, the thing is always that you can name your kid whatever you want, as long as there's a relatively conventional nickname for them to fall back on if they so desire. Whether shortening the name (something like "chrissy" for Crystal) or a middle name.

I know someone named after a character from Dragonriders of Pern (Brekke)

Okay, A) do they pronounce it so it rhymes with Becky, or what? and B) that is a terrible character to name someone after. I mean she was kind but her life kind of sucked.

Nayrt, but if they do, the kid's name is how my mother refers to breakfast.

That name looks and sounds Dutch to me.

One of my friends just had a son and named him Fezzik, which is ridiculous, amazing, and I love it. Alyce is a very pretty name, and you should go for it.

If the gods ever curse me and I birth a child, I will try my best to not be horrifically irresponsible and name them Potroast, but I would be so distraught that it'd be inevitable.

Okay, I loved Fezzik in The Princess Bride, but, no. She couldn't have gone with Westley? Or Inigo? I mean, Fezzik is better than Humperdinck.

+1

that kid is going to hate his parents.

Her other kids have normal names. I think this is the last hurrah and they wanted to live a little. He has a normal middle name which he can go by if it comes down to it.

HOWEVER, one thing to keep in mind is that both her and her husband are built like linebackers, and all four of her other kids are built like linebackers and surpassed my pixie ass in height and weight by the time they were seven. He is definitely going to grow into his name.

I'm not familiar with the book but this is a delightful secret.

I definitely read this book as a kid because there was a cat on the cover.

That's fine. Alyce is a nice name, albeit with an less common spelling. It's not a name a kid will likely be made fun of for.

Naming after fictional characters only becomes problematic when someone wants to name their kid something like Anakin, Gandalf, or Zaphod Beeblebrox.
