I'm not in the Phandom much so I really can't comment, but I think a del Toro POTO adaption would be great.

However, I'm much more potentially interested in and excited for two other literary adaptions that he is hoping to one day make: Pinocchio and Frankenstein. Especially the latter, since an adaption that is both faithful to the book and entertaining doesn't really exist.

I want to see the well-spoken, intelligent Byronic hero version of the monster that we get in the book, even though I will always have a soft spot for the Karloff films--literary accuracy be damned.

That being said, can we agree that we don't need another Dracula for awhile?

OP here—I doubt you’ll see this but I would be totally onboard with a del Toro Frankenstein (I love the original book and also there’s a fanmade PotO/Frankenstein comic out there that’s actually kind of cool) and avoid Pinocchio like the plague (any version of Pinocchio. Brrr.). I don’t mind the endless parade of Dracula adaptations so much though.

(Sort of) OP and yeah, I don’t know if I’d love the end result either, but at least I’m pretty sure del Toro would do a ton of research and make an interesting movie, and I don’t think even he could make a weirder version than some of the ones that exist already.

I just think Phantom of the Opera is so overdone. There are so many other stories that haven't been made into a movie or maybe have only one adaption. Why go back to this one?

So you have more adaptations of one of your favorite pieces of media than you want. Why does it necessarily follow that other people shouldn't have the adaptations they want?

I just think things that haven't been adapted yet should get adaptions rather than endless adaptions of the same thing. LOTR has 2 adaptions. Barely. How many does POTO have?

I don't understand your logic here. Adaptations are made based on monetary reasons, they're not merit based. Even if no more PotO adaptations were made ever again doesn't mean that their slot goes to a more deserving piece of media.

OP would like to see another adaptation because they don't feel any of the previous ones did the canon justice. That's not an unreasonable wish from a fan. I'm not sure why you're acting as though it's unfair of them to feel that way and insulting a piece of media they enjoy. Is that how you'd want people to behave towards you and your favorite fandoms?

(Sort of, someone else made the secret) OP here, and thanks for sticking up for me. I do understand why people get frustrated at endless adaptations, though, because Spider-Man exists. (Only kind of joking jfc can we get a 20-year Spidey-moratorium plz.) But unfortunately my bitching and pleading for a decent PotO adaptation isn’t gonna mean shit unless del Toro or his buddies haunt FS.

(In which case hi Guillermo I love you you’re awesome please direct a version of The Phantom of the Opera and wipe Joel “Batnipples” Schulmacher’s *sexy* nonsense and Julian Sands’ pretty-boy Phantom stuffing rats down his trousers from my mind thank you.)

Oh, I get it, too. But nobody has to watch adaptations they don't want, and frankly, in the case of PotO I get it because it's a popular book/show and the more recent movie adaptation was kind of crap. Of course fans would like to see someone do a better job, or see another director's take on it, there's nothing wrong with that.

(Sort of) OP here and I get where you’re coming from because Spider-Man: We Must Have Two Films Per Decade is a thing, but on the other hand you’re right, there are lots of PotO adaptations.

One involves an undeformed hot young blonde Phantom getting off to putting rats down his pants. One involves immortal Freddie Krueger cutting faces off murder victims and sewing them to himself. One involves ‘70s disco music. At least one involves the Phantom having an Oedipus complex and confusing Christine for his mother. I just want one that actually kind of follows the plot of the book and has actors that can sing playing Christine and Erik.

Sort of OP here (thanks again to the secret harvester who did the hard work) and I want more versions because no-one’s done it right. I love the story but hardly any of the film adaptations are watchable more than once, and even that’s a struggle for most of them. Also, would you have been happy to only have the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings movie?

It’s not as though my wishing for more adaptations is gonna make it happen. If that were the case I would’ve wished for a different director, scenic designer, costume designer, and actors in the 2004 movie, and that rat Phantom never got made at all. And the version with Jeremy Irons as Erik had made it further than the drawing board. And so on.

There are lots of books I love that will never have film or tv adaptations. I can wish for multiple films based on all of them and they won’t change a thing.

I feel the same way you do. I've seen or own all the versions I'm aware of (even the Hungarian one with Jane Seymour), and it's sad that for me, as a book purist, the most faithful to the original remains the animated version! And even that has some pretty big departures...

Anyway, I would be thrilled if del Toro took on the project. I think his style and directorial "voice" would be pretty close to perfect, as well as Doug Jones being my #1 choice for a book-canon Erik.
