I ship them as well, but mostly because it feels like a more realistic adult relationship than her soft-focus romance with angel was.

Buffy and Spike both had issues (Spike moreso than her, for sure). In working out and through those issues they did lot of damage to each other, but the point to me was that they DID both change and grow and keep trying (and again, Spike had a lot more work to do to, but he did it.) That's why I like the ship.

spike chose to become a better person for buffy, angel just lucked his way into being decent each time

while i recognise their relationship was terrible i also just really prefer that narrative
