If the author implies they're not using warnings for things that would normally be warned for, then I think it's not uncommon for people to PM them to ask for a bit more elaboration.

I've had people PM me to ask for clarification about some ambiguous tags, and it's never bothered me. They want to read my fic, they just want to make sure the experience isn't going to trigger them, or bum them out for the day or whatever. I get that.
