I don't know if he's being defensive, but I'd say anyone who takes anything that comes out of the Joker's mouth seriously is an idiot.

I don't know. It was the way he shifted and got all tense when he said it that read "LOL DEFENSIVE" to me. It also had the feel of a mantra-- like he'd been repeating it to himself to try and convince himself of its truth.

I don't think the Joker even knows what truth is, to be honest. He lies, he changes his stories, he just says whatevertheheck he feels like.

He definitely seemed defensive when he said it, but I still think he believed it to be a fact, not just something he was trying to believe for his own sake. If he really believed that other people's lives meant so little that he had no qualms about taking them, believed so little of his own life that he didn't mind being caught or killed, and believed as little of everything from money to pretense as he sure seemed to, it would make sense that he really thought he was ahead of the pack.
