Yes, absolutely. I can entirely see identifying with part of what the Joker says. Hopefully people will then realize it's up to them to give life meaning, at least for themselves, and use the strength of their reaction as a strength in seeking out something different.

I guess what annoys me so much about all these "oh, you're so ~edgy~" reactions is that I think it's just a legitimate, and not particularly abnormal, stage to go through. When so much of life is built around telling us to do the normal things, and they seem like bullshit, if your first exposure to a character who throws up their hands and says "bullshit" is the Joker, of course you're going to identify with that, at least for a while.

I think I don't identify with the Joker, but I identify a bit with people who identify with the Joker...particularly if they're still having to ride the bus to high school.

the problem is that THEY think they are being so edgy and cool and they just look like whiny children who think that noooo oooooone understaaaaaaands theeeeeeiiiiir paaaaain.

we do understand where they are coming from. the majority of us FUCKING GREW UP. so maybe they should just get over it and move on with dealing with their lives instead of sitting in their bedrooms and cutting themselves with paper and crooning to Evanescence and Linkin Park.

in short, quite a few of us don't have a great deal of tolerance for bullshit made up emo teenage angst. not all teenagers go through this and quite a bit manufacture it just so that they can be set apart from the crowd and be unique.

you know...like all the other whiny emo teenagers.

Oh, and how do you know what THEY think, and what emo teen angst is "made up"? They're obviously not doing a very good job of setting themselves apart from the crowd and being unique if they're picking things that are so very not unique.

But then the people I knew who were treated as making up their teenage angst turned out to be being abused at home, or suffering from severe mental health problems, and a couple of them killed themselves. So forgive me for giving a shit.

Same goes for people who reckon they know when someone is an emo who cuts for 'attention' and when someone cuts for whatever the approved 'real not emo angsty teen cutter' reason is.

Yeah, it annoys me when it's about people who self-injure too, particularly when it goes along with shit like "real cutters keep it a secret!" Yeah, they often try to keep it a secret from people around them IRL, but that's exactly why somewhere like LJ makes a good space for them to talk about it instead of feeling ashamed everywhere they go.

Of course they need some actual therapy, but I don't see what good just piling on the nasty does. And I tend to feel that if someone needs to do something that drastic to get attention, they've been seriously deprived of much needed attention in some area of their life and damn well need some.

The people I knew who were all-out displaying their soooo important teenage angst, turned out to be privileged ungrateful overreacting kids that would proclaim that all Humanity should perish because their crush dumbed them. So forgive me for not giving a shit.

I think you need to get over yourself and what happened in the past.
