To jump on the bandwagon: This secret really offended me. You don't come across as a troll, and I don't want to be wanky, but seriously. A lot of people write or read about things they don't want to be involved in personally. Not every who writes/reads non-con wants to rape someone/be raped. Most people who write or read about someone dying don't want to die or see someone they love die. There's a certain fascination with other people and other peoples' experiences that defines creativity in itself. You can't be truly creative if you can't enjoy imagining something beyond your own experience or ability. We'd all be writing very happy, mellow realistic fiction if people only wrote about what they enjoyed doing in real life.

So, uhm... really? Aseuxality is no different from homosexuality or heterosexuality. It just means YOU'RE NOT INTERESTED. Are you one of the people who knocks on straight people for writing/reading slash/femmeslash? It's the same sort of situation. There are many reasons to enjoy reading smut, and they don't all have to do with fapping or schlicking. Sex is not a category of experience completely separate from everything else imaginable. When you start reading only fic that involves things you have experienced or want to experience, you'll have a bit more room to talk, but not even that would give you the leverage to tell people to go out and do something that they are uncomfortable with and that could cause psychological damage just so they can read about other people doing it.

100% this, for sure.

Yes, Aristotle. Thank you for mentioning his ideas on catharsis.

*high fives you*

Depicting/portraying/discussing situations that would ordinarily frighten/scare/hurt/disturb/etc. in a form of art (as in a medium that can be read/written/watched/listened to, etc.) allows the audience to experience in a safe, controlled environment.

Catharsis.

It's a beautiful thing.

Ahh, and thanks for having a clear, mature mind about asexuality! The world definitely needs more people like you! ♥ It's so frustrating trying to explain to someone about how sex does absolutely nothing for me. I don't know how many times I've been told to go seek therapy and whatnot.

orz; I actually just went and read about Aristotle's theory on catharsis since you mentioned it. I had no idea I was using a nameable theory, ahahah.

But yes, this is exactly true. For an asexual, reading smut is simply a way to aid in the imagination of the positive aspects of sex without having to experience the negative ones. Or, for that matter, it's an opportunity to imagine the positive aspects that said person wouldn't even experience if they DID have sex. It's also often true that an asexual is much less likely to read smut if it's emotionless. The draw in it is the emotional depth and the intimacy.

Er-- yeah, I'm not asexual, but my best friend is ( [livejournal.com profile] sougo, who also commented about this), and this really applies equally well to my own tendency to read and write slash above anything else, when I haven't the slightest intention of ever touching anything with a penis in a sexual manner, thank you very much. I don't have to sleep with a man to know that I am not just turned off, but made downright uncomfortable by a male touch. I wouldn't enjoy heterosexual sex, I'm not going to put myself through an experience that I wouldn't enjoy and that I know would leave me feeling used regardless of if the man in question really likes me. And I'd feel like a USER because I know in advance that I'd only be sleeping with him to prove my dislike of it. But I can read and write slash because it's enjoyable for me to have the out-of-self experience of seeing things from a male point of view, or just because, hell, I like the characters and their dynamic.

I will never think of my homosexuality as something I need to "fix", or straight sex as something I should just try. So I don't see why you, or my friend, or anyone else should "fix" their asexuality or put themselves through what could be a really traumatic experience (especially for females, who have to give a unique kind of emotional vulnerability in addition).
