Thanksgiving plans

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-11-21 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
For fellow Americans (and anyone else who celebrates), what plans to you have for Thanksgiving this year?

My sister and brother will be here within an hour and are staying to Saturday. We'll do the traditional foods on Thursday with Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and I don't know what else. Can't help with the cooking this year and my mom isn't doing too well, so I think we're going to go easier than usual on the food. I hope we still have corn casserole, though. That's my favorite.

Nothing, thankfully. We did our Thanksgiving last week so this week is just a four day weekend. Awwww yeah.

Ooo, nice. 4 day weekends are the best. Enjoy your time off. Going to watch anything in particular? I've been watching Marvel clips on Youtube, and I think I'm going to give in and have a marathon.

My husband and I are going to get pizza and beer and have a movie marathon (Star Wars, yay)! And I'm off work on Friday too so we'll probably just go hang out at our favorite sports bar and chill all afternoon. I'm looking forward to it, tbqh!

Now that sounds like a really fun way to celebrate. Enjoy yourselves.

I wish I was doing nothing but instead I’m stuck in a family dinner with my mom, my niece, my super racist sister who likes to pretend she isn’t super racist, my hardcore alt-right nephew, and the two unluckiest foreign exchange students who don’t know the shitshow they are walking into

Aw. I'm sorry. That sucks. I hope you do get some time to yourself. And maybe at least the food will be good?

My mom is on a visit here from NC, and so she, my two brothers, and I and my daughter will all be at my little brother's house, cooking and eating and having a fucking good time. :D (Well, Mom won't be cooking, she's past that now, nor will the Monstrous, but us three will.)

We have not had a dinner/holiday like that in years, i have not seen my mom in years, i just want to sit and talk and laugh and have fun. I'm going to stay with my brother for probably a week after, to visit with Mom more before she has to fly on back.

I'm an expat, but I always do a huge "everybody I know and their brother" kind of party. Do a stuffed turkey and a giant stuffed pumpkin, and let everyone else contribute the rest as they like. I always make everyone sing jingle bells because it was originally planned for this holiday and that's just how I roll (this year I've recruited some children to ring bells - in harmony - with the guitar. If that doesn't make the transition between dinner and dessert memorable, I don't know what will.) Everyone is asked to state one thing they're thankful for from the past year.

Aw. Sounds great. We were that family too when we all lived overseas. We'd invite all the fellow Americans over and have a big dinner.

Stuffed pumpkin?
That sounds delicious, but what do you stuff it with?

Going to my grandfather's house for the first time in a long time. My grandfather doesn't know my wife is trans, so we're both super-nervous about going at all. My racist/homo/transphobic father will be there, along with his brother who will likely be the same to Karie, and my grandfather's partner who is sliding so fast into dementia that we don't know how to handle it. My racist/homo/transphobic brother and his horrible wife will NOT be there, so that's something. And we'll get to see the kids (that my lovely mother will be caring for while their parents go stand in line for Black Friday sales). Karie is 'not allowed' to see the kids because she's trans, but haha, they won't be there to stop us. So basically it'll be awful with the exception of my lovely mother.

Wow, I am really sorry you have to deal with people like that. My son is a trans man so I always react badly to hearing crap like that.

Re: Thanksgiving plans

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, be proud that you're going at all.
Even with all that hardship you have to deal with, people like your mother would want you to be there. Go because you belong there, just like everyone else at the table- and if some of them don't approve, fuck them.

(I hope you have a good time with your mom!!)

We had an early Thanksgiving at my sister and brother-in-law's last weekend, because my brother-in-law has to work later this week.

But on Thanksgiving itself, we may go over to my aunt and uncle's for a few hours and hang out there. And on Friday morning my mom, sister, and I might go out for breakfast together.

Re: Thanksgiving plans

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
We already had our Thanksgiving celebration early so I'm just going to hang out and relax and enjoy the time off work. Might do some (online) Black Friday shopping and maybe do some baking or something.

thanks to the generosity of my sweet friend I'm going to this restaurant that does this AMAZING buffet every Thanksgiving. :)

Same as we do most years. Dim sum for breakfast with all the extended family / family friends in the area, and then my immediate family is doing a laid back Thanksgiving dinner that night that were buying from a grocery store (except for the stuffing, I'm going to make stuffing)

I didn't know you had a brother, unless he's your brother-in-law? That's cool.

It's just going to be me, my parents, and the pets this year. My parents are in charge of dinner, so while I know we'll have turkey, and hopefully stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce, idk what else. My mom mentioned green bean casserole, but idk that I've ever had it, so I'm excited to try it.

I'm really just excited to sleep in on Thanksgiving tbh.

Going to a restaurant with family. The place does a special Thanksgiving prix fixe menu. It's great - no cooking, no dishes!

I'm not american, but we do celebrate Thankgiving, just earlier than you guys- but we still have black friday where I live, which time and time again I forget that it specifically correlates to american thanksgiving;; I just get so excited for these deals before the holidays~ I'll probably be shopping on the day myself- mostly because I have a fixation on wraping gifts, and the season (somehow) managed to surprise me this year...;;
