It was the relatively contemporary setting that disappointed me, not the major drama. I'd just been psyched up about the possibility of a Big Gay Historical Love Story, and the actual plot seemed rather mundane in comparison.

No, I'm not. As someone who was raised on classical literature, and who was taught to appreciate the nuances of the English language (among others), I find those books to be spectacularly poorly written.

Don't be ridiculous. I too was raised on what I suppose you are calling 'cassical literature', and I am studying English at university. I love the canon but by god, if everyone wrote like Thomas Hardy or Homer I would be doing maths. Reading has to be fun, and it's not necessary to have every piece of literature you pick up be glowingly amazing.

Besides which, I think that you are sorely mistaken about Pullman. Those books are beautifully written (and hey, if you want to disagree and cite the 'classics' again, consider E. Nesbit and the Doctor Doolittle series. Both children's classica, both pretty simplistic pieces of balls, really, compared to what Pullman's doing, even though I liked them fine as a kid.)

New doesn't equal bad. Old doesn't equal good. Paolini's stuff does happen to be derivative horseshit, and Rowling, while a fabulous story teller, isn't the greatest writer ever known, but don't for god's sake be snobby about 'classical' versus 'modern' stuff.
