Sometimes, I swear people forget to include the context of the era when they read stuff. Watchmen was written in the eighties, during the tail end of the Cold War, and it was one of the first to subvert the entire superhero genre; that's part of the major reason why everyone considers it such a classic.

...Though I personally do think it's good, but you have to appreciate it for the flawed characters and the themes, not for the sole storyline itself. Watchmen is one of those things where when you try to summarize it for someone, it just doesn't work, because yeah--it basically becomes, "there's a murder conspiracy and someone teleports a giant alien thing to New York and half the city dies."

When all you can see of the comic is something as two dimensional as that, no wonder you think it sucks. :/

This. Although often I think it's not so much that they forget to include the context of the era as that they have no clue what that even means.

I really, really don't get how anyone could read it and not pick up on the "who will watch the Watchmen?" theme, but eh, I suppose a lot of people have never heard that line before either.

Granted, even if they've never heard of the line before, it's...it's QUOTED INSIDE THE NOVEL for God's sake. And spray painted onto the walls in some of the panels. How do you miss that? Alan Moore is a great writer, but he's also really not that subtle in expressing some of this themes.
