I hate the trope in fanfiction where a character loses their memory but pretends nothing happened, and plays along with a bunch of strangers, instead of doing the sensible thing and telling people they have amnesia. It's weird and doesn't make any sense. Who would do that!?
*Pictured: actually the least objectionable instance of it I've seen.

LMFAO what an example. a disembodied spirit who's spent 6 seasons (idk how many volumes of manga I only watched the anime) pretty much telling anyone who would believe him that he doesn't remember his life or his name and you can tell him he's a pharaoh all you want but he doesn't remember it

he didn't even know if he was really time-travelling or it was an elaborate dream sequence, what did you want him to do? walk up to Set and go "hey yeah high priest? I don't know my name or yours or anything, what's up?"

Well, yeah, hence the "least objectionable" part of it. It made sense in the Memory World arc; the people were essentially NPCs and probably wouldn't have been able to help, anyway. But I had to get the image for the secret from somewhere, and I happened to have the manga page saved already.

Because while I'm not sure it would be my first impulse, it doesn't seem that unusual to me, especially if the character is generally skeptical or calculating or distrustful, which covers a lot of characters I know.

I actually love this trope to death if it is done well. If it is done clumsily it's horrible. I'm not even sure why I like it tbh. Maybe the fun of watching the character try to navigate the world when it's a mystery to them?
