I swear to god, I have never read a Stephen King novel, but that name felt very familiar when I read this secret. (I googled to find out where it was from.)

Worst case of this I’ve ever seen: the main character is named Dusa, she’s of Greek descent, she’s suffering from a mysterious condition that causes soft tissue calcification, and she has recurring nightmares about snakes and being decapitated. There is no way not to see the “twist” coming.

She was Icarus all along

This... sounds weirdly familiar (like, not the myth, I know what that is, I mean this specific interpretation). Was it fic or a book?

It was a book. I thought it was called something like Snake Dreams. I can’t find any record of its existence, though.

I think I found it - "Snake Dreamer" by Priscilla Galloway. Or at least it sounds extremely similar...

I now have a very vague memory of reading it in first school. Thanks for the nostalgia kick!

And the worst part about that whole thing is who the hell names their kid "Dusa"?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I admit it, I giggled a little. It's almost kind of sweet that someone thinks they're putting in a sneaky reference.

Yeah... I would have laughed.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I laughed, but I must admit, that's something I did when I first started writing fic, except I was putting in Greek mythological figures, not Stephen King characters.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, I once started reading a fic where all the OCs where named after characters from other fandoms but they weren't supposed to be those characters, just people coincidentally named like them. There wasn't even an in-story excuse for it like "my parents loved Lord of the Rings so they named me Frodo", it was just a modern-day AU where neither Middle Earth nor Tolkien ever existed but there was still a guy named Frodo Baggins. And Draco Malfoy. And Buffy Summers. I never made it past the first chapter and it still sticks in my mind years and years later.

Hahaha, oh wow. I'd love to know what that author was thinking and if they were just... a little too deep into fandom or just doing it for teh lulz.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I actually know a Frodo and a Bilbo and an Arwen, all siblings, but unsurprisingly, their parents are extremely into Lord of the Rings!
kittydesade: Matthew McConaughey as Walter O'Dim in The Dark Tower, smirking because he knows he's won (heheh fuck you)

If the author REALLY wanted to be sneaky "Richard Fannin" is always right there. Or just use another RF name and drop in a significant 19 somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it would have gone over my head.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, when I get hints like this I'm pleased I'm in on the joke.
