IDK, I read his whole "fought against Voldemort" thing more or less as rebellion against his family and following James' lead than anything else. It's not that he's completely amoral so much as his own morals are downright fucked, and the situation depends on whether I see him applying more blue-and-orange or complete lack of morals.

Also, he INDULGED Harry. He did it to a great degree.

Frankly, indulgence was actually something Harry needed. His whole life he'd never been given much of a choice in anything, even by the good guys like Dumbledore and the Weasleys. Sirius actually listened to Harry. And, even though he was the one who'd known Harry for the least amount of time, somehow he knew Harry better than anyone else.

You can have indulgence to a safe degree.




Sirius was not offering that. That's my contention with this, and it really speaks volumes as to the rose-colored glasses have for Sirius. I like him because he's such a complex guy with fucked up morals and a reckless streak with no brakes.

I think you're vastly, vastly overstating his flaws, though. The character was around for a total of three years of book time, but only in the fifth one did you see him in anything like a normal capacity, and while he did some reckless things, I don't recall anything standing out as being EXTREME that also couldn't have been explained away by his frustration being housebound and useless to the cause. In the fourth book, when he was on the lam, he was actually shown taking great caution and always warning Harry to be careful.

And, in the fifth book, you can easily make the argument that his mental state is deteriorating because he’s trapped in his hates childhood home with the abusive portrait of his abusive mother and generally feeling useless because he can’t leave while others are in danger.

Like, I don't get this anon in the thread claiming to love Sirius but also thinking that he was this UTTERLY RECKLESS MESS when, if you think about it, the thing he did in the fifth book that led to the objectively worst consequence had nothing to do with recklessness or even Harry.

Sirius mistreated Kreacher, which led to Kreacher feeding information to the other side, which led to the final conflict in that book.

Now, the reason why Sirius treated Kreacher the way he did was completely understandable and actually rather tragic for both parties involved, so you can definitely see the complexity in the character there and can extrapolate a lot more about him and his flaws from these details. But nah, it was his ~*recklnessness*~ that was hardly seen that made him irredeemable.
