It's the art style.
There's no definition in it, no lines, no contrast... Just a bunch of pastel blobs that do little for each and every character. While it looks like there might be the stereotypical 'personality type' difference to distinguish between the characters- they have such a low range of individuality between them, due to the art style, that male or female is just nonexistent give or take a set of tits...

I have not seen this show at all but just looking at the picture provided I can tell what gender everyone is supposed to be coded for. The archer guy has broad shoulders and chest, and larger arms from a larger body frame. Another guy has a mustache. Everyone else with exotic hair colors and female-style hair cuts is a girl. Presumably the colorful pegasus is a girl too. The only one who might be androgynous is the small girl on the far left with blue hair, but even then there's a tiara on their head which is something that boys (traditionally IRL) don't wear.

I was expecting major androgyny, but gender is already there in the design and everyone here except for two characters is a girl.

I should have mentioned I have no idea about the show myself...

I do see where you're coming from though, I guess I meant some of that when I mentioned their personality types. Like the default association of the characters are there, but at the same time I feel it's such a weak visual that if any of them turned out to be another gender/whatever, I wouldn't be surprised...
(but then again I'm tired, and might be misreading what you're saying;;))

I've not sure what personality types you're looking for when all there is to go by is smiles. It's like looking at the promotional image of a crime show where everyone is dressed the same and wearing the same stern expression, and then trying to guess the character's personality from that. Don't know for sure unless you watch. :d

Additionally gender =/= personality. I throw that out there because I saw gender brought up in the mention as personality, and just want to say that even if someone looks one way, it's not good to place them into a limiting box of social expectations because of that.

mild gender presentation spoilers

The pegasus is voiced by an adult man, and he's fabulous.

So is Bow, who keeps pegging my bi-dar since traditionally straight boys in media are not allowed to squee and coo over shit. It's a shame really that they're not able to.

For gender-bending characters, I think you need to go to Horde side with Catara arguably butch, and Lonnie hella butch, but Lonnie only gets about a dozen lines total over the course of the first season. I need to watch the later episodes again to see how Spinnerella and Netossa are developed, but they don't really get anything until the last episode.

Isn't it implied bow is trans, since he has a binder on when he's shirtless?

Huh, I didn't get that. I just thought he likes showing off his abs.

Really? I'm greatly enjoying the diversity of body types presented in the show, visible boobs or not, especially among the Princess characters.
