(Anonymous) 2018-11-27 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)He has a fleet of military spaceships and the nominal command of forces bent on the subjugation and/or destruction of several planetary governments and their people.
Now, I’m sure there are AUs out there where Ben Solo doesn’t go off the rails in his late teens or early twenties and meets 20ish Rey in his early 30s, like in canon, but unlike in canon he’s not a whiny, murderous whackjob.
I’m so grossed out by his canon self that I have no desire to read those fics, but at least they’re not “villain avoids becoming villain and instead is a brooding duke and meets the heroine who is not a (resourceful scavenger/travelling musician/trainee magician/fill in canon occupation here) but a generic beautiful plucky heroine,” which I cringe at even when it happens to my favorite problematic ships.
Especially when the characters then follow a fairly standard romance novel and/or romcom plot to its normal conclusion. I much prefer fic which changes either parts of a canon’s backstory, or adds one or two new elements or changes the canon setting. Even with pairings I like, changing both setting and most of the characters’ backstory and then adding soulmate marks or whatever makes me feel like I’m reading original fic with a cheap, badly made fanfic veneer.
And if you take away Kylo Ren murdering people and throwing tantrums, what’s left of his onscreen persona to write fanfic about? Apparently the novelizations go into more detail, but if everything shown onscreen about him makes me flinch, I’m not gonna hunt down script novelizations to read more about him.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 06:28 am (UTC)(link)But following through on Kylo Ren being Mr Darcy means that Luke is Lady Catherine which is hilarious.
