What is something you don't see in media these days?

Good or bad.

Example: Smoking in TV/Film happens a lot less.

When it comes to American television, there don't seem to be many sitcoms anymore; they're mostly darker sitcoms or dramedies. (I'm not sure which of those The Good Place would be.)

It's funny because I actually prefer the more serious sitcoms and dramedies, but part of me does miss shows like Parks and Recreation and FRIENDS. These are pretty intense times, so maybe it's harder for me in some ways to imagine a world without any real stakes, but it's also a nice fantasy for half an hour.

Parks and Rec only ended like 3 years ago, but I do agree.

(but also, there's a lot of sitcoms that I don't watch and it's entirely possible that some of them actually are as fun and fancy-free as I'd want them to be)

Montages. Especially the training kind.

yesssssss

montages are so good and so fundamentally cinematic and everyone should use them way more

Yeah, I think people (especially creators) tend to think of montages as cheap storytelling. And I definitely see where they're coming from. But they don't have to be cheap, they can be handled well and bring flavor to a show without sacrificing subtly.

The first thing that springs to mind is the montage in the first (or maybe second?) episode of Mindhunter, where Holden and Bill are traveling around America teaching cops. It's such a sharp, stylish, well-placed montage that makes the story and the relationship between the characters feel lived in, in a way nothing else could have.

Telephone booths

I love seeing telephone booths in movies and TV

Dream sequences, random song-and-dance numbers, special event episodes(Alternative Universe/Time Travel, Black & White, Shakespearean style).

Just in general, shows that embrace campy fun stories and styles just because they can (Xena, Lois & Clark, Moonlighting, Buffy, etc).
