There's only been one season so far, but it was definitely an over-arcing plot kind of show. IIRC they do recap, but it's not the kind of thing you can watch out of order. I have mixed feelings about it.

I love early Stephen King and the small town Maine setting, and it was great for that atmosphere and feel. There's plenty of callbacks to King's novels, but you don't need to get them all in order to understand the show. There are some excellent performances by all the leads, especially Sissy Spacek and Bill Skarsgard.

But... and this is without spoilers, the plot is very non-linear, albeit beautifully done. If you're bothered by open endings and questions that don't really get answered, this is not the show for you.
