I've only caught a few episodes, but it's my understanding that the couples are trying to secure legal immigration BEFORE they marry, rather than the other way around. I know in one of the episodes I saw, one half of one couple was discussing with her dad & stepmom the possibility that her dad would sponsor her boyfriend/fiance for legal immigration, and her dad was pointing out that if their marriage failed, he'd still be on the hook to sponsor him for however many years the sponsorship was meant to last.

Then again, a later episode I saw made it seem as though the same couple were looking for her to immigrate to his country rather than him immigrating to the US.
