129. The adaptation is a completely different work. It’s not supposed to be a conversion of the original but rather a creative work for the director. So you’re pretty much wrong.

129. That depends what exactly they're complaining about people saying. It's not elitist to say that you think an adaptation is crap because it completely misses the major points of the original, or changes the characters in a way that guts the emotional centre of the work, yet a lot of people will yell "elitist" at that.

What if the adaptation is an awesome work on its own right even when it has anything to do with the ideas in the original?

Then I'd argue with someone saying it was crap, saying I thought it was awesome in its own right, heh.

The roses in the secret automatically made me link it with the secrets from the past week or two about the Phantom of the Opera movie, which is a major cause of elitism wank within the fandom, so I was thinking of the arguments I've read and taken part in over that. In general though I agree with your point, an adaptation can be an awesome work in its own right, and might use the original to present an entirely different set of ideas.
