I wasn't trying to diminish the secret or anything. I can understand why this person would be reticent about identifying with Shinji - there are people like you (or at least those who you're describing) who would be inclined to be irritated because they hated Shinji as a character, and there are people like me who (loved Shinji but) inwardly groan as soon as someone says "ohmigod only Shinji understand the depths of my despair." What I'm trying to convey to this person is that neither you nor I nor anyone else has any real bearing on how or why or with whom s/he identifies - that s/he will undoubtedly find a hearing ear somewhere, because, essentially, we are all the same. Hell, even a cynical bastard like me who disdains all angst unless it directly relates to the piloting of giant mech would would be amenable to a "Shinji is me and here is why and here is why it is so important" discussion as long as it didn't get too emotastic (which, by the way the poster did not - get too emotastic, I mean... in his/her secret... I mean.). And personally (assuming the aforementioned emotastic-moratorium has been observed), I can respect a person who can look at a character as blatantly flawed as Shinji and say "Yes, I have those flaws" because a) it's courageous, b) it's honest, and c) we can follow it up with "But look, look he has all this faith, all this kindness, all this delicacy and not everybody needs to be the protector of all, it's perfectly okay to be the one who needs to be protected for a while - so that means I'm okay, too, right?" I am a firm believer in the power of literature to help us explain ourselves, and if a character resonates with a person enough that they feel they have found their own reflection, done up with an absurdly skinny figure and paranormally bizarre circumstances, then even an anime can qualify as literature, because it has served literature's purpose. (Also, I think Eva is among the best five anime ever made, but that's totally subjective.)

I neither hate nor love Shinji, because he's a well-written, human, character. And I do get what you are saying.

I would have liked to Shinji to grow and change more as a person, though. He never really got to resolve his emotional problems or conquer his social anxiety.
