IMO it's really difficult to trace how much of that is specific to JJ, and how much of it is just the inevitable way that characters change / decay over the course of a show?

No you're right, it's definitely true of the characters in general. IMO in canon JJ was always about as interesting as watching paint dry (which she continued to be once she became a field agent), but I thought liaison!JJ had a more interesting dynamic with the rest of the team when it came to fics and what have you. Plus in general the show had so many field agents already that I feel it was inherently a boring choice to remove some of the variety in the roles the characters played.
